Coincidence or Not?

(An excerpt from the book, I Didn’t Know That About Mormons!)

Seventh-day Adventists are often confused with Mormons. Why is that? First, they are both relatively new religious movements that came upon the Christian scene during America’s Second Great (spiritual) Awakening in the 1800s. Second, they both claim to have or to have had a prophet of God. Third, they both claim to be the true or remnant church upon the earth today (to be fair, even the Roman Catholic and Orthodox churches claim to be the true church!). Fourth, they both have a prominent and highly visible evangelizing witness to the world, including to other Christians.

Mormons, particularly those in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS Church), have more in common with Seventh-day Adventists than most people realize. Even the members of these two faiths are mostly not aware of these striking similarities (see chapter 3 for more details).

Being a Seventh-day Adventist and a long-time investigator of the Latter-day Saint movement, I have discovered that the members of both faiths, in general, have a very nominal and oftentimes skewed understanding of each other. More importantly, both faiths are blind to the very real possibility of coming to a spiritual showdown with each other as we near the end of time. Why do I believe they will play opposing roles? First, there are too many similarities, which would suggest that there is some type of counterfeit and antithesis relationship between these two faiths. Second, both movements believe they have an important prophetic Elijah-like role to play in bringing people’s hearts back to God (see Malachi 4:5-6). Only one of them can be God’s true remnant movement, which means the devil can surely use the other to his advantage and perversion in the last days. Third, prophecy points back to history (the showdown on Mt. Carmel), which shows that there is nothing new under the sun when it comes to the devil’s planned Elijah-like measures warned of in the book of Revelation (see Revelation 13:13). To learn more about this, read my book Unveiling the False Prophet.

I believe it is important for all Christians, and especially for Seventh-day Adventists, to have a better understanding of the Mormon faith and movement. In this book you will discover TEN intriguing facts about Mormons, one of which even most Mormons don’t know about their own religion!
